What do you do?
I’m a regulatory and litigation lawyer, with a lot of experience – though not exclusively – in the financial services sector. I spend much of my day figuring out ways to help my clients resolve their legal problems. Often, this means finding new ways of looking at an issue. Being a specialist in both regulatory law and litigation fits my character, too, because I always want to prevent the same issue happening again. So any resolution has to stand the test of time. Plus, my specialisms complement each other, as regulatory issues often only come to light after litigation has started.
Away from the office, I’m director and trustee of ProMo Cymru – a communications agency specialising in the third sector. I’m also an officer in the Boys’ Brigade and look after the 16+ age group.
How do you make a difference for your clients?
I usually work with entrepreneurs. People who want to find a better way, and want a lawyer who provides an A1 service. I’m a great believer in collaborating, and I’m not afraid to challenge clients on their approaches to business.
Joining Carbon has allowed me the opportunity to find new, exciting and creative ways of engaging with clients. Ways that no traditional law firm can. Yet my clients and I still have all the resources a top tier firm provides. The lawyers in Carbon are all as entrepreneurial as their clients. Longevity of the relationship and the development of our clients’ businesses are the priorities – not trying to hit billing or income targets.
What’s more, the firm has completely restored my faith in, and enjoyment of, the profession. In fact, it confirms all the reasons I became a lawyer in the first place. Call me an idealist, but from a young age I wanted to ensure fairness and justice in the world. With Carbon I feel I can.
What is up there as your top achievements?
I’ve never lost a trial for a client. For me, it’s about cutting through litigious issues and developing the right strategy to dispose of a particular matter. It’s also about being commercially-minded. A lawyer is only as good as the last matter they handled, especially litigation. So it’s really important my clients receive great strategic advice, early, about the likelihood of a claim succeeding.
I put my heart and soul into what I do, so it’s nice to be recognised by clients for the effort. Since joining Carbon I’ve been described as a “star” and a “legend” by two separate clients.
Outside of work, my top achievement is being a father to two smashing children. Though at times it can be somewhat tiring!
